Singapore’s District 1 is a thriving business hub better known as the Central Business District of Singapore. District 1 is located in the Core Central Region, South of Singapore and covers areas such as Cecil, Raffles Place, Marina, People’s Park and Boat Quay.
The largest financial hub in Singapore is situated in District 1, spanning from Raffles Place to Marina Bay, an area built on reclaimed land. Dubbed the “Wall Street” of Singapore, Raffles Place and Marina Bay have the highest concentration of Grade A offices - highly sought-after by financial institutions and professional service firms. Some of the famous office buildings at Raffles Place and Marina Bay include Samsung Hub, Six Battery Road, UOB Plaza I, UOB Plaza II, Ocean Financial Centre, Marina Bay Financial Centre, OUE Bayfront and One Raffles Quay.
Apart from business activities, District 1 is also a popular destination for recreational activities and tourism. Situated right next to the Central Business District is Boat Quay positioned at the mouth of the Singapore River. Once the busiest quay in Singapore, Boat Quay has transformed into a popular hang-out place for food and drinks, featuring an eclectic mix of high-end restaurants, alfresco dining and bars.
Arguably the most iconic landmark in District 1 is the Marina Bay Sands, an integrated resort developed by Las Vegas Sands at Marina Bay. It features the world’s largest atrium casino and a SkyPark that boasts a 150m infinity pool with 360-degree views of Singapore’s skyline.
District 1 plays a crucial role in the development of modern Singapore, dating back to the colonial period when it was part of the Civic District planned in the master plan by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822. Snippets of the past can be found in District 1 from national monuments to heritage buildings such as the conservation shophouses found in Chinatown.
Plans have been rolled out to enhance the commuter journey in the Central Area by doubling the MRT network. Developments in the Central Area will average just a 5-minute walk to an MRT station in the future. District 1 is well-served by at least 8 MRT stations and four MRT tracks; North-South Line, East-West Line, North-East Line and the new Downtown Line.
Comprised of high-end developments, houses in District 1 are highly popular amongst home-buyers and are reportedly the most sought-after by foreign buyers from Southeast Asia. Popular housing developments in District 1 include The Sail @ Marina Bay, The Clift, One Shenton, Marina Bay Suites, and Marina One Residences.
More houses will be added in District 1 with the development of Marina South, as announced in the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Master Plan 2014.
