SINGAPORE (EDGEPROP) - Raffles Hotel Singapore is planning to continue its literary legacy that dates back to 1887 when renowned writers such as Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad stayed at the hotel. Following its reopening in August, the hotel is introducing its inaugural Writer’s Residency Programme and the return of the Writers Bar.
The Writer’s Residency Programme was designed to create and nurture creative writing talents. As part of the programme, the hotel will host up to two writers annually for up to four weeks, with the specific duration dependent on the type of work being commissioned. The programme is open to both local and international writers aged 18 years and above.
The first invited Writer-in-Residence is British-born essayist and novelist Pico Iyer, who has released his latest book, This Could Be Home: Raffles Hotel and the City of Tomorrow. Drawing upon his many stays at the Raffles Hotel Singapore over the last 35 years, the book explores how Singapore and Raffles Hotel Singapore continued to evolve around history while meeting the ever-changing needs of people.
Meanwhile, the iconic Writers Bar has now been expanded to a full bar. Located in the Grand Lobby, it is decked in luxurious furnishings with lovingly curated mementos and books, and serves wines, spirits and bespoke craft cocktails to celebrate the art of the written word.
To commemorate the hotel’s first Writer-in-Residence, the team of mixologists has created a series of cocktails that are inspired by Pico Iyer and his works. The Writers Bar is exclusive to residents and restaurant patrons with prior reservations.
