Hong Kong’s Steve Leung Design Group (SLD) unveils a redesigned The China House by Chef Fei at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. Located in a heritage house next to the hotel entrance, the 11,840 sq ft restaurant that specialises in Chaoshan and Cantonese cuisine reopened last month following renovations.

SLD drew inspiration from Chaozhu and Shantao’s heritage, and reinterpreted it into a contemporary nostalgic venue, curating its essence and presenting it through a modern lens, says Mai Chongchaiyo, chief creative officer of Steve Leung Hospitality (SLH).

The China House features two floors, with an atrium bar, lounge area, and a tea bar on the ground floor, and the main dining hall and private dining rooms, alongside semi-private salons, situated on the second floor.

Taking cues from Thailand’s vibrant culture and arts, SLH collaborated with local brands and artisans to create the restaurant’s decor. For example, the atrium and staircase features large pendant lights made from metal crafted by Thai artist Saruta Kiatparkpoom, also known as PiN. Wallpapers were chosen from Jim Thompson, the Bangkok-based silk and textile producer, while timber was provided by Siam Woodland.

The completion of The China House’s transformation coincides with the official opening of SLD's Bangkok office. The new office is part of the company’s “Rejuvenation, Diversification, and Globalization” strategy, which sees the company venturing into new markets.

In Singapore, SLD’s recent work includes projects at The Skywaters, a mixed-use development by a Perennial Holdings-led consortium on Shenton Way, and the Paiza Royal Collection suites at Marina Bay Sands.
