URA is looking for ideas on how to revitalise areas along the Kallang River. It is reaching out to the public and private sectors for feedback on how the 10km stretch can be transformed.

URA’s proposals, which focus on adding new waterfront housing, renewing old industrial estates and providing seamless connectivity from Bishan to the city centre, are displayed in an exhibition at the URA Centre Atrium from March 29 to May 2.

Firstly, it said there is potential to inject another 100,000 dwelling units into the neighbourhood in the next two decades, in addition to the current estimate of 800,000 residents, or 200,000 homes, within 2km of the river. Some of these residences could be located in waterfront developments. Most of them are likely to be in Kampong Bugis. Old industrial estates such as Kallang Distripark and Kallang Industrial Estate also have the potential to be renewed into mixed-use precincts.

Secondly, the government is planning to improve accessibility by providing an uninterrupted route along the river for pedestrians, joggers and cyclists. Consultations with the public and private sectors, such as architects and landowners, will continue until year- end, and more details on URA’s plans can be expected next year.
