The three years from 2014 to 2016 have been tough ones for the residential property market in light of the property cooling measures and sluggish economy. This month, the inaugural EdgeProp Excellence Awards 2017 will celebrate projects and developers that have prevailed despite a challenging market at a gala dinner on Oct 23 at the Pan Pacific Singapore.
Over 20 developments have made the shortlist in various categories. Luxury projects that have stood out for their development excellence include the likes of City Developments Ltd’s Gramercy Park, GuocoLand’s Leedon Residence, Keppel Land’s Corals at Keppel Bay and Far East Organization’s Alba and The Scotts Tower.
In the non-Central areas, UOL Group’s Seventy Saint Patrick, Wing Tai Holdings’ The Tembusu and MCC Land’s The Nautical stood out.

When it comes to innovation, SP Setia’s Eco Sanctuary, Wing Tai’s Tembusu, Far East Organization’s Hillsta and Parc Olympia by Koh Brothers Group led the pack.
For the Landscape Excellence Award, Keppel Land’s The Glades, Wing Tai’s The Tembusu and Far East Organization’s Greenwood Mews were the nominees.
Developers who scored the highest across the different categories will also receive the Top Developer Award. Nominees in this category include CapitaLand, City Developments, Far East Organization, Keppel Land and Wing Tai.
The shortlisted projects and the ultimate winners were based on a rigorous judging process by an independent panel of judges from more than 50 submissions received from over 20 property developers. The scores by the judges were audited by KPMG Singapore.
“We want to establish a credible benchmark and to recognize Singapore’s developers who have created residential projects that not just standout in the skyline, but where residents are proud to call home,” says Bernard Tong, CEO of EdgeProp Singapore. “For full transparency, we partnered KPMG Singapore to ensure that the entire process from submission to selection of winners is verified and documented.”
The panel of independent judges include veterans in the property business, namely Tan Tiong Cheng, President of Knight Frank Asia Pacific and Advisor to Knight Frank Singapore; Lai Huen Poh, Managing Director at RSP Architects Planners & Engineers and Executive Director of Rowsley Ltd; Chris Flannery, a Director of Swan & Maclaren; Yu Shiming, Associate Professor with the Department of Real Estate at National University of Singapore; and Hwang Yun Hye, Assistant Professor for Master Program for Landscape Architecture at National University of Singapore.

“This is the inaugural EdgeProp Excellence Awards for Singapore, and it focuses on residential developments,” says Knight Frank’s Tan. “For most Singaporeans, residential property is the single biggest investment they will ever make. The awards focus on excellence in different areas - innovation, environmental sustainability, benefits to the neighbourhood, good quality and design. More importantly, it’s about projects that meet or even exceed buyers’ expectations.”
The judges spent a lot of time going through the details of each project, and visited many of those that were shortlisted. “The projects that impressed us in the mass market segment were Eco Sanctuary and The Tembusu for their innovative design and quality, as well as The Glades for its landscaping,” says Tan. “In the high-end segment, both Gramercy Park and Leedon Residence stood out.”
For Flannery of Swan & Maclaren, seeing the sites was critical. “That helped focus all the reviews and discussions between the judges,” he says. “Seeing the usability of the spaces as well as the overall design, the environment and the urban context was important, especially when Singapore becomes increasingly built-up and seeks to maintain its ‘Garden City’ values.”
According to Professor Yu, “The overall quality and design of projects in Singapore have gone up substantially over the last 10 to 20 years, and we have really excellent projects today.”
In time to come, Knight Frank’s Tan hopes that such awards “will spur even more developers to create a better built environment for Singapore and at the same time offer better options to homebuyers and investors.”
The category that is not judged but that will be decided by the editors of EdgeProp is the Real Estate Personality of the Year. Another category that’s not judged as it’s based on quantitative analysis is Value Creation.
