History & Origins
Holland Village is a neighbourhood located between the planning areas of Bukit Timah and Queenstown in the Central area of Singapore. It was established in the early 1900s by the Dutch community in Singapore and was once home to plantations, nurseries and British colonial estates. It is named after Hugh Holland, an early architect and amateur actor.

Housing
Notwithstanding Holland Village’s reputation as a pricey expat enclave, the market for HDB units at Holland Village has been booming in recent years. In May 2019, a 5-room HDB flat at Holland Drive was sold for S$968,000. In April 2019, another 5-room HDB flat at Holland Village was sold for S$945,000. The exceptional performance of the property market for HDB flats in Holland Village is even more pronounced given that Singapore’s public housing market has been in a downturn for the past few years.

Holland Village, being a prime location, also has many private condominiums and landed estates, which makes it a popular spot for investors and wealthy families looking for a home alike. In particular, Holland Village is home to Chip Bee Gardens, a freehold property formerly developed as British military housing in the 1950s, but is now owned by the Singapore government and rented to private individuals, mostly Western expatriates, although many Singaporeans reside there as well. In addition, Holland Village is also home to Holland Close, a large HDB estate located at the southern part of Chip Bee Gardens.

Transportation & Connectivity
Holland Village boasts of great convenience in relation to transport, particularly given that it has had its own MRT station – Holland Village MRT station (CC21) on the Circle Line – since 2011. It is also situated in between 2 other MRT stations, namely Commonwealth (EW20) and Farrer Road (CC20) and an MRT interchange - Buona Vista (EW21/CC22).

In addition, there are 10 bus stops around the parameter of Holland Village, all of which are located within a five-minute walk from one another.

Education
Holland Village boasts of close proximity to many educational institutions. 2 primary schools nearby are Henry Park Primary School, one of the nine primary schools in Singapore to offer the Gifted Education Programme as well as Nanyang Primary School. 1 international school - Anglo-Chinese School (International) and 2 other good schools offering joint high school (secondary) and college programmes - Eunoia Junior College and Hwa Chong Institution.

Shopping
Holland Village has seen extensive redevelopment in relation to shopping malls in recent years. In 2018, Holland Piazza was launched at the area of the old Holland Shopping Mall, an iconic mall which has long serviced the area which was torn down and subsequently redeveloped. Holland Piazza is home to several popular food and beverage delights, such as Ben & Jerry’s and Saizeriya. Residents of Holland Village are even more spoilt for choice when it comes to food, given that the Holland Village Food Court, situated along Lorong Liput, is a one-minute walk from Holland Piazza. Holland Village Food Court has been operating for 22 years and serves a wide array of delicious local delights, ranging from Hokkien Mee to Nasi Lemak.

Holland Village has also seen the launch of several new shopping malls in recent years, adding to the vibrancy of the area. In this regard, the Raffles Medical Centre opened by the Raffles Medical Group on 14 June 2016 is a medical hub, offering health screening, family medicine, dental care, TCM and specialist services. It is also home to several eateries, such as Sushi Tei which serves Japanese sushi and Nostalgic Café which serves local coffee, roti prata, pandan cake with coconut shredding toppings, just to name a few.

The Star Vista Mall, situated right outside Buona Vista MRT Station, is another new mall located a short distance from Holland Village and which provides a major hub for Holland Village residents. It is part of a 15-storey mixed development built in Vista Exchange and is Singapore’s first naturally cooled mall. In addition, its Integrated Hub comprises a Civic and Cultural Zone anchored by a 5000-seat auditorium, as well as a Retail and Entertainment Zone. It offers a wide array of food and beverage options from various cuisines and also boasts of many shops, such as sports shops selling sports apparel/merchandise and Cold Storage Supermarket.

Recreation
Holland Village is traditionally known for its eclectic nightlife, particularly in respect of its quirky drinks in hip bars with live music. As such, this has made Holland Village not only a popular Friday night spot for the working crowd to unwind and chill after a long stressful week of work, it has also become a popular tourist destination. In particular, Wala Wala Café Bar is an old-school drinking place complete with its second floor devoted to its live bands, allowing its visitors to get up close to the musicians while enjoying affordable drinks and delicious food (Buffalo wings, truffle fries) in the company of old friends. In addition, Lucky Bar offers signature cocktails such as Dragon’s Breath, made of Monkey Shoulder scotch, goji berries and winter melon syrup. Another interesting drink concocted by Lucky Bar is the Geisha Lover, a Japanese-inspired red wine and grape liquor, with whisked egg white at the top and a few other surprise ingredients giving rise to its sweet taste.

Holland Village is also home to many sports studios, thus further gaining popularity with the young working crowd which generally places much emphasis on keeping fit. For instance, F45 Training Holland Village is part of the worldwide F45 community, whose high-intensity workout and high quality gym equipment has taken the world by storm. It also boasts of many friendly yet intense trainers who push attendees to achieve new heights in their fitness journeys. Further and given that yoga has become increasingly popular among women in Singapore in recent years, several yoga studios such as Freedom Yoga Holland Village and Om Shiva Yoga @ Holland Village have strategically opened their studios in Holland Village.

URA Master Plan
in 2018, URA released a 2-Zone Land Parcel for tender as an extension of Holland Village. Zone 1 is a residential use zone, whereas Zone 2 is for mixed development. The area is approximately 23,000 square metres and will be located right behind Lorong Mambong, creating a new street called Holland Village Way. With even more options for work, living and play, Holland Village is set to become even more pedestrianized and vibrant in the near future.
