Homes and the way people shape their personal spaces can reveal intimate stories about the lives they’ve lived, like an art gallery displaying decades of cherished mementoes and memories.
A couple have built their three-storey terraced house with rooftop at Richards Place in the style of an art gallery, a contemporary aesthetic that integrates a minimalist form with adaptable and functional design. The details extended to premium fittings, including high-end Gaggenau kitchen appliances, typically found in top luxury residences, and Blum systems for refined functionality.
Completed recently in 2024, this freehold property in District 19 sits on a 2,657 sq ft plot with a total built-up area of about 6,361 sq ft.

The site of the new home was once the family home of the owner's wife, who grew up in the original 1960s house. The owner, a landscape architect by profession with a background in architecture, led the architectural direction.
Keen-eyed visitors will see this expertise and architectural insight while walking through the various rooms and spaces of the house.
The result is a uniquely designed home that echoes the sense of space typical of large bungalows and is constructed to high building standards and specifications, says Cheryl Tan, associate senior marketing director at Huttons Asia and the property's marketing agent.

While they were envisioning the design of the new house, the owners sought to create a home with living areas that felt expansive and soothing. The layout of the house was also designed to enhance airflow throughout the rooms while allowing natural light to brighten the interiors.
The first floor features an entryway, double-volume dining room with an open-concept kitchen. The double-volume ceiling accentuates the sense of space while windows let in natural light during the day. "We have always enjoyed spacious communal areas like large dining room where we could comfortably host friends and family," the owner says.

The entryway sits within an inner courtyard, which has been designed to allow for the future addition of a lift if the next owner chooses to install one. The courtyard also facilitates the flow of natural ventilation and sunlight across all three floors.
The couple also use statement pieces made from upcycled natural materials to highlight key spaces. For instance, a part of the main door frame is crafted from the offcut of a hardwood tree that was used to make the dining table.

The use of natural materials is also evident in the use of large-format granite floor tiles. "I wanted to showcase how the same material, polished in different ways, could be used to differentiate interior spaces visually," the owner says.

Tan adds that the layout moves beyond simply dividing rooms and offers an architectural exploration of living spaces designed to be enjoyed and truly lived in while also ensuring plenty of privacy and personal space.
Future owners can easily add up to three more bedrooms with minimal interior work, without the need to demolish any brick walls. The design and layout of the house add to the property's long-term value and flexibility, making it appealing to a wide range of buyers, like multi-generational families to newlyweds.
