Therme Group has appointed former JTC Corp chief Tan Boon Khai as CEO of Therme Group Singapore. In a Feb 2 press release, the developer says Tan will lead the development of Therme Singapore, its $1 billion wellness attraction at Marina South.

Tan was CEO of JTC Corp between September 2020 and March 2025. Prior to that, he served as chief executive of the Singapore Land Authority and held senior roles at CapitaLand and The Ascott.

His appointment comes three months after Therme Group secured a tender from the Singapore Tourism Board to develop a wellness attraction on a 4ha waterfront site next to Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay. The project will be Asia’s first large-scale social wellbeing development, and is expected to open in 2030, the group states.

“Boon Khai brings with him a proven track record in development, management and hospitality, and we are delighted that he has joined us in developing the next evolution of Therme’s wellness experience in Singapore, and bringing wellness to all locals and visitors in Singapore and the surrounding region,” comments Therme Group founder and CEO Robert Hanea.

Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, Therme Group is a global developer of wellbeing destinations, with completed projects including developments in Bucharest, Romania and Erding, Germany.

Therme Singapore will be the group’s first destination in Asia and its largest project to date. Designed as an inclusive, all-season wellness resort, the development aims to make holistic wellbeing accessible to a broad audience, while fostering social interaction and community engagement. When fully operational, the attraction is expected to draw about two million visitors annually, with overseas visitors accounting for roughly half of total attendance.

Mah Bow Tan, chairman of Therme Group Asia, says the Singapore project represents a strategic entry point into the region. “Asia, particularly Singapore, presents great opportunities for Therme Singapore to showcase its wellness concepts and technology,” he comments. He adds that Tan’s leadership experience and stakeholder relationships will be critical in ensuring the project enhances the vibrancy of the emerging Marina South Coastal precinct.

For Tan, the role marks a return to the private sector and an opportunity to shape a new category of urban development.

“Singapore is uniquely positioned to become a leading hub for urban wellbeing in Asia,” he says. “I look forward to working closely with our partners and stakeholders to bring Therme Singapore’s vision to life — creating a world-class destination that enhances quality of life for both locals and visitors.”
