They also have another special to celebrate the Cricket World Cup 2019: Five bottles of Bira 91 Blonde—official beer for the cup—at $49++. Call it peer influence, but even the innocent Italian restaurant doing its nonna thing has jumped on the happy hour bandwagon. Seeing as it’s mainly a place of hearty Mediterranean fare, the happy hour deals reflect the cuisine theme. Every day from 6pm to 8pm, you can get a $35 bottle of prosecco, $6 330 ml bottle of moretti beer, or both. The prosecco comes with complimentary Italian sausage, calamari, or bruschetta. This is a markedly tamer happy-hour spot compared to its neighbours, so you can try this place if you’re looking for a demure start while the night is young, and maybe, you know, go out on a bang later. Much, much later.

There are a number of Stärker spots dotted around the island, all very, very friendly to adults and ready to wash away the many woes of adulting—literally. Here you’ll find monthly promotions including beer o’clock (these happy hours are devoted to only beers), and a considerately holistic happy hour package. The Stärker folk have thoughtfully bundled beer and food together in their happy hour offerings, so you don’t have to drink on an empty stomach. This place brings to mind the trite saying, Blink and you’ll miss it. Reminiscent of platform nine and three-quarters in the Harry Potterbooks, shoehorned between the much larger Fatboys and Wala Wala, SMÖÖ’s door is unassuming. Still, it has some interesting drink promotions. Happy hour runs from 2pm to 8pm every day here, covering beer on tap, bottled beers, wine, cider, soju, and sake. They also have unique tower combinations, including soju and yakult (starting at $28 per jug to $68 for a three-litre tower) and orange or mango champagne towers at $68 for three litres. Remember to keep your eyes peeled for the little glass door next time you’re in the village.

Wala Wala is a true bastion of Holland Village’s nightlife, and its happy hour runs till 9pm daily. San Miguel is a patron saint living permanently on the premises, accompanied by his international mates Stella Artois, Asahi, and Kronenburg 1664 blanc. Spirit lovers can get buzzed from $7 per glass of bourbon, rum, vodka, and more, and the happy-hour deal extends to entire bottles, too. Champagne doesn’t seem to have a happy-hour special unless you’re dealing in bottles, but the reds and whites are up to 30% cheaper during magical hours.

Kanpai means ‘dry cup’ in Japanese, and is the Japanese word for ‘cheers’. If you’ve been to a Chinese wedding, you’ll realise kanpai is simply the Japanese version of the Chinese ganbei. You don’t need to be of either nationality to appreciate happy hour here. This watering hole has high ceilings, a darkened interior, and closes at 9.30pm every day except Friday and public holiday eves (happy hour ends 9pm on those nights). Kanpai features house pours, from Japanese whiskies and wines at $8++, to a pint of Asahi Super Dry for $16++and bucket of three 300ml sake bottles at $98++.

The colourful décor here is a sharp departure from the dark and broody designs splashed across the other watering holes. Then again, El Patio isn’t a watering hole, per se, but a Mexican restaurant. Peer influence has persuaded it to get into the drinking game and toss up some Central American happiness. Beer, tequila, red and white sangria (woohoo!), and margaritas are all available on the happy hour menu, which runs from 3pm to 9pm daily. Get a tequila shot for $5++, a jug of margaritas for $39++, and a six-bottle beer bucket for $40++. Wine worshippers can also find their preferred poison on the list, starting at $70++ for a couple of Chilean wine bottles.
