SINGAPORE (EDGEPROP) - The government has unveiled conceptual plans to redevelop a 10ha brownfield site in Farrer Park into a new housing estate that will comprise about 1,600 new flats. The estate will also feature several new sports and recreational facilities.

The first flats in this new estate will be launched within the next three years.

The redevelopment site is bounded by Dorset Road, Keng Lee Road, Hampshire Road and Race Course Road. Nearby MRT stations include Little India and Farrer Park stations on the North-East Line.

According to URA, the entire site has been earmarked for residential use since the 1998 Master Plan. Existing developments on the site include a field, a former boxing gym, Farrer Park Swimming Complex and Farrer Park Tennis Centre.

The government says that since 2018, it has been engaging stakeholders of the Farrer Park community and residents of the surrounding area to explore ways to retain the sporting identity and heritage of the area.

The government plans to set aside about 20% of the site as open spaces for sports and recreational uses. This includes a 1.2ha central green space comprising a field and park. The former boxing gym will be converted into a multi-purpose community sporting space and integrated within one of the future housing developments.

However, URA says that it is not feasible to retain the Farrer Park Swimming Complex due to technical issues such as ground settlement, as well as outdated filtration and piping systems. It says that a refurbishment would not be cost-effective. URA will replace it with a new sports centre that will include swimming pools and other sporting facilities.
