City Energy, which provides piped town gas nationwide and lower-carbon home solutions, has launched Singapore’s first intelligent gas hob designed to reduce the risk of fires caused by unattended cooking — a persistent concern in households.
The Küche intelligent gas hob features a built-in heat-sensing system that can automatically shut off the gas supply when cookware overheats, helping to prevent fires before they start.
Figures from the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s 2025 annual report show that unattended cooking accounted for the largest share (30%) of residential fires — or 318 cases out of 1,051 incidents — last year. These fires typically occur when food is left heating for too long, causing temperatures to rise to ignition point within minutes.

City Energy’s new gas hob aims to address this through its Intelligent HeatShield system, which continuously monitors cookware temperature during use. A thermistor sensor detects changes in electrical resistance as heat rises or falls, feeding real-time data to a control chip that assesses whether conditions have reached unsafe levels.
When the temperature exceeds 280°C — a threshold at which ignition risks increase significantly — the system automatically cuts off the gas supply. This helps prevent a fire due overheating, particularly in situations where cooking has been left unattended.

Similar safety features have been implemented in markets such as Japan, where heat-sensing gas stoves are mandated. Following their introduction, cooking-related fire incidents fell from 4,507 to 3,719 within two years.
In Singapore, the Küche intelligent gas hob has been adapted to local cooking habits and regulatory requirements. It also incorporates a flame-failure safety device, which automatically shuts off gas supply if the flame is extinguished by spills or wind.
The appliance is supported by app connectivity, allowing users to monitor usage, set timers and remotely shut off the gas supply within safety limits. Notifications and alerts provide an additional layer of oversight, particularly for busy households.
Soh Guan Hong, senior vice-president of residential sales at City Energy, says the launch reflects the company’s broader push into integrated home solutions, bringing “safety, innovation and practical everyday use for homeowners”.

The product is positioned as particularly relevant for elderly users and multigenerational households. Its safety features operate in the background without requiring users to adopt new habits, while remote monitoring can offer added reassurance to family members.
Koon Wai Leong, general manager at property developer Hoi Hup Realty, says such features address a common household concern in a practical way by adding “an extra layer of protection against unattended cooking, without complicating everyday use”. He also notes that such safety features could become increasingly expected in new homes.
Beyond safety, the new gas hob boasts features designed to improve cooking consistency and ease of use. These include five pre-programmed cooking modes — soup, steaming, pan-frying, boiling and deep-frying — each with preset heat levels and timings. A nine-level flame control system allows for more precise adjustments, while a 4.2kw burner supports high-heat cooking methods such as stir-frying.

It also includes hob-to-hood linkage, which allows compatible kitchen hoods to activate automatically when the hob is in use, improving ventilation. Separately, the app enables users to view estimated gas consumption and receive error notifications.
Küche’s existing range of products has already been incorporated into several upcoming residential developments in Singapore, including Blossoms by the Park, Lumina Grand, Hillhaven and Novo Place.
The new intelligent gas hob is offered to developers as part of built-in kitchen fittings, with plans to make it available to retail consumers at a later stage, depending on demand.
