District 19 is comprised of Hougang, Punggol, Sengkang and Serangoon Garden which represents Singapore’s north-eastern part of the island. These four areas are mostly residential with recreational and commercial amenities.

Hougang

The name Hougang originates from a Chinese dialect (Hokkien), meaning “back of the river” as it started out as an immigrant village consisting of Chinese Hokkien and Teochew descendants.

Ever since the British established a hospital for the chronically and mentally ill, the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) can be found here along with many various charity organisations, Housing Development Board (HDB) flats, condominiums and private housings. Defu Industrial Park is its primary industrial area where furniture, automobile parts and ice are manufactured and traded on a wholesale basis.

Some of Hougang’s new residential launches include Midtown Residences@Hougang, offering a mixed residential and commercial development offering 160 homes and 107 shops on a 99-year leasehold tenure.

Jewel@Buangkok offers six blocks of prominent condominiums that provide additional amazing facilities such as Flying Fox, Hill Climbing and Rock Climbing Wall to appease the adventurous. Hougang has numerous shopping centres to serve its population - Hougang Mall, Heartland Mall, while smaller malls include Hougang Point, Hougang Green Shopping Mall and Kovan Centre. Getting around is convenient, as within the vicinity you’ll find Buangkok, Hougang, Kovan and Serangoon MRT Stations.

Punggol

A quiet residential neighbourhood in the northeastern part of the island, Punggol was once known as an area inhabited with poultry, pig and fish farms along with rubber plantations before new urban developments turned it into public housing areas, where young couples are settling down as shopping malls have sprung up to serve residential needs, as well as better public transportation for commuting.

The renowned Punggol Beach and Punggol Point (a national heritage site) attracts tourists and locals yearning for a quiet time on a clean beach. It is popular among the youths who indulge in challenging water sports such as boating and wakeboarding.

Currently, Punggol has evolved into a new waterfront estate containing HDB flats, private condominiums and houses where the first batch of smart HDB flats, Northshore Residences I and II at Punggol Northshore will be embedded with smart technologies to study the environment, to aid in making better ecological management decisions.

The Terrace@Punggol Drive is a new executive condominium project, offering 747 units of apartments and penthouses on a 99-year leasehold tenure. There are more new residential developments such as the Watertown Condo @Punggol Town Centre, The Amore EC @Punggol Central and River Isles @Punggol.

Seafood and steamboat foodies are in for a treat with many restaurants in Punggol Settlement offering mouth-watering dishes at popular outlets. You can travel to Punggol by bus, taxi or Punggol MRT Station.

Sengkang

The Sengkang area was once a fishing port that flourished with vegetable and pig farms as well as pepper and rubber plantations before the Sengkang New Town was built. In Chinese, the name Sengkang translates to “prosperous harbour” and The Sengkang New Town is also HDB’s satellite residential town.

Currently, the area contains HDB apartments, private condominiums and houses where residents along Sungei Serangoon and Sungei Punggol are able to enjoy a stunning sea view and water sport activities around the waterway.

Although Sengkang HDB flats are known to be smaller than other HDB developments, the area is brimming with social amenities like schools, shopping malls, public library, medical and community centres. Shopping malls like Rivervale Mall, The Compass Point Shopping Centre and Seletar Mall are popular among residents.

New mega-developments such as High Park Residences with 1,399 apartments for sale with full condo facilities are attractively priced whilst La Fiesta Sengkang condominium has limited units left for sale. Riverbank Condo @Fernvale offers 590 units of 99-year leasehold tenure. Sengkang and Buangkok MRT Stations are nearby for commuters to conveniently travel to other parts of Singapore.

Serangoon Garden

A glamorous town scattered with landed properties and condominiums, Serangoon Garden transforms into a night hub of entertainment and food for those active at night searching for restaurants, pubs and karaoke bars.

Established in the 1950s, Serangoon Garden served the British military as a lodging estate and this is why most roads here have British-influenced names. Today, it is an upscale residential estate supported by facilities and amenities boasting of a vibrant nightlife along Serangoon Garden Way and Maju Avenue.

HAUS@Serangoon Garden would attract those wanting freehold landed property, featuring 2-storey houses with 5 bedrooms attached with an attic and basement as well as double car parks.
