Queenstown

Queenstown is located in the centre of Singapore. The town, named after Queen Elizabeth II, is the first satellite town in the country. Before been taken over by the Housing Development Board (HDB), it was built up by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) in the 1950s.

Previously, one of the most prominent landmarks in Queenstown was the 14-storey Forfar House, the first high-rise apartment block built by the SIT. Standing far into the sky, it was the tallest residential building in those days.

Currently, the site of the former Forfar House is occupied by Forfar Heights, a 40-storey HDB apartment complex. Blazing blue lights at the roof line are an attractive feature of this building, which is reminiscent of the early design that embedded blue glass into windows.

Due to its central strategic location, coupled with amenities and education opportunities, property prices in the vicinity have been driven upward in recent years, making it a very attractive prospect for investors.

Queenstown is easily accessible through the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system by Queenstown MRT station and bus services operating in the area, so it has good transport links.

Residents here can access a vast array of facilities and amenities. Singapore’s first outlet mall, Anchorpoint Shopping Centre is located here. Another shopping destination is Queensway Shopping Centre, a favourite place to hunt for sporting apparel such as racquets and sneakers at real bargain prices. Additionally, Swedish home product retailer IKEA is also a stone’s throw away from Queenstown.

Despite being a test-bed for public housing developments in earlier days, Queenstown is now a home to Singapore's oldest university, the National University of Singapore (NUS), and its first polytechnic at Singapore Polytechnic.

Food-lovers can head to the Commonwealth Avenue Cooked Food Centre, which serves the most marvelous braised duck in all of Singapore.
